Dallas, Texas
TMJ or TMD is an acronym for Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Essentially, TMJ or TMD are a group of symptoms that arise from a misaligned temporomandibular joint.
The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connect the lower jaw to your skull on either side of your head. When the temporomandibular joint comes out of alignment, it can create a number of different dental, as well as overall, health problems. Some of the most common TMJ or TMD symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Grinding Teeth
- Clicking or Popping Jaw
- Jaw Pain
- Neck Pain
- Shoulder Pain
- Chipped Teeth
- Sore Teeth
TMD or TMJ causes these painful symptoms because when the temporomandibular joint is out of alignment, it forces the muscles and other tissues surrounding the joint to strain constantly. If the temporomandibular joint is out of alignment, even if you jaw feels like it is at rest, the muscles are still being overly strained.
As a result, the strained muscles can cause serious headaches and migraines, as well as painful or sore muscles in your shoulder, neck, and back. For many people, TMD or TMJ causes them to subconsciously attempt to put their jaw in its correct position. This can lead to grinding or clenching your teeth, a habit that can cause serious dental problems like chipped or worn teeth.
